only 53% of Hillary supporters will vote for Obama

The AP-Yahoo News poll, conducted by Knowledge Networks, is part of an ongoing study that tracks the attitudes and opinions of a scientifically selected group of more than 2,000 Americans to see how their political views evolve over the course of the campaign.
Yahoo poll found that 53 percent of the Democrats who favored Clinton for the nomination two months ago now back Obama for president:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080626/ap_on_el_pr/ap_yahoo_poll_clinton_voters_1

Twenty-three percent of Clinton's backers picked Republican John McCain over Obama.
Of the rest, 16 percent were undecided, 5 percent were for independent candidate Ralph Nader and 3 percent said someone else.
The AP-Yahoo News survey of 1,759 adults had an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

(note from the diarist: many estimate that McCain needs just 10% of Clinton supporters to win in November)

Question for kids: If Obama can get only 53% from Clinton supporters (core of democratic party), how much he can get during general election: more a less? Don't rush with answer, try to think...

Who's turning down a vote? They're turning themselves down. You can be part of the process of making history with the first black President, or not. You can be part of the process of ousting a third Bush term, or not. You can choose to HELP this country, or not.

On principle I'd rather have fellow Democrats who identify with the party due to a commitment to the country, not to an individual.

Vote for Obama or you are a racist.

Re: Real convincing argument: (none / 0)

Exactly.  It's fascinating to see that a month after the race has ended, the level of non-support we're seeing for Obama is still at Indiana/North Carolina levels (approx. 50%).

A few weeks ago, I thought I too would "come home" but with every passing day, my resolve simply hardens.  I think what we're seeing in most polls now is Obama at his ceiling.  I'm not sure how selling out his base helps either (public financing, FISA, gun control, death penalty).

2004 swing state margins: PA-2%, OH-2%, IA-1%, WI-0.5%, MI-3%, FL-5%, NM-1%; Alienating 50% of the party is a luxury we can't afford.

Actually not. The United States has a population of 300 MILLION. Less then 20% of the population voted in the primaries. That's why Obama is launching a massive voter registration drive.

When asked an open-ended question about the first words that come to mind about Obama, some former Clinton supporters used words like Muslim or terrorist. Those misconceptions have been fueled by Internet rumors that point out his name is Barack Hussein Obama but otherwise lie about his background.

23% of Clinton's backers amounts to approx. 5% of the electorate.  Kerry lost approx. 12% of Dems to Bush in 2004.  This is old wine in a new bottle.  Current polls take all of this into account (and what they show, btw, is that McCain's problem holding onto Republicans is just as large as Obama's problems holding onto Dems).

Excellent finds, engels! (2.00 / 6)

The poll suggests time is beginning to heal some rifts from the primary campaign and that the New York senator's endorsement of Obama carried weight

The poll found 53 percent of the Democrats who favored Clinton for the nomination two months ago now back Obama for president. That's an improvement from April, when only 40 percent of Clinton supporters said they would back Obama over McCain.

"It wasn't a difficult decision I was a lifelong Democrat," said 55-year-old Susan Gates of Massachusetts, a former Clinton backer now firmly in Obama's camp.

Gregory Scheetz, 56, of Barstow, Calif., said he wanted Clinton to win because of her experience, her intelligence and because it's time to have a woman in the White House. But he said he moved to Obama after Clinton endorsed him on June 7, even though he's a registered Republican.

"I feel that he can bring change," he said. "There's people in our country that I see need help."

Dude (2.00 / 2)

Really?

We don't yet have a convention bounce. Obama is trending up. Clinton is JUST getting into the fight, and we have a 57 EV lead on the worst major electoral map

You can seriously be concerned at that? The current situation is certainly not going to worry any O supporter, and it's just making you look like some sort of political illiterate.

You do need a better hook, if these diaries aren't going to dissolve into ribald hilarity and back-slapping.

LOL LOL

"The LOWEST POSSIBLE ELECTORAL COUNT I can find online only gives Obama 57 more electoral votes than McCain!!!  The sky is falling!!"

You can't be serious about that.

Oh, and just for the record, Obama can get 271 electoral votes and McCain can take 267 and Obama will STILL win the presidency.

Obama knows something you don't, he's behind. (1.00 / 1)

Obama is very nervous about the slow pace of Hillary supporters jumping on his bandwagon. He said so in his meating with the black caucus.

There won't  be a landslide without the list of others you list. You are dreaming and you act like the electoral college on this site is carved in stone. It's a FAIRYTALE.

Even if Obama had a 17 point lead, which he doesn't, he could lose it in two seconds. Obama will be attacked and his negatives will go up. You could set you watch to it. His current polls are not that high and they are inflated by 3-9 points because a small percentage of people are lying to the polsters.

Dukakis lost an 18 point lead and lost in a landslide.

Wait until Obama makes his VP selection known before you pop the cork on the champaign. Considering he just locked up the nomination and the Republicans are almost through as a party, I'm not too impressed with Obama's numbers.

Re: only 53% of Hillary supporters will vote for (2.00 / 6)

I think engles inadvertently stumbled upon a great idea.  The name PUMA is a bit cheesy, and all the ads I've seen use a video from the 1970's of a puma snarling.  His "unite my ass" comment spurred a moment of genius.  I present to you:

UMA: Unite My Ass

Instead of having to resort to old nature videos for your advertisements, you could use Uma Thurman as a mascot.  You'd have plenty of source material, from Pulp Fiction to My Super Ex-Girlfriend to The Truth About Cats & Dogs.  It's a veritable goldmine!

odd.. (2.00 / 2)

Let's play math-

The average of the RAM polls of late show 81% of Democrats supporting Obama (better than Kerry at this time).

However- if 47% of Clinton supporters support Obama... and Clinton got about 45% of the Democrats during the primary...

Then doesn't that mean that about 30% of Clinton's supporters in the Democratic primary WEREN'T Democrats?

John McCain wants to stay in Iraq.
by ihaveseenenough on Thu Jun 26, 2008 at 05:35:27 PM EST

Actually, no. (none / 0)

Clinton received about 50% of the Dem vote. About half of them supports Obama, that's about 25% of the Dem vote. So, you add 25% of the Dem vote to 50% that Obama got and you have 75% of the Dem's supporting Obama. Add to that Republicans and Independents and you get to your 82% figure.

Look - McCain will lose, because it doesn't even appear he's campaigning. Just as many Republicans will not vote McCain as Democrats not voting Obama.

"I want her campaigning as much as she can," Obama told reporters Wednesday. "She was a terrific campaigner. She, I think, inspired millions of people, and so she can be an extraordinarily effective surrogate for me and the values and ideals we share as Democrats."

53% of Clinton supporters currently supporting Obama is not the same as proof that only 53% will support him. And that 10% number for McCain is only if he holds his base, which he isn't doing.

Re: only 53% of Hillary supporters will vote for (none / 0)

39% of McCain supporters said they would not vote for Bush in OCTOBER 2000.

So... anyway. 1/2 of 1/2 of Dem primary voters currently say they will not vote for the presumptive nominee. That is 1/4 of the primary voters. If you extrapolate out that and assume 1/2 of the total Dem votes to be cast are reflected in the primary (based on 2004 data) then that means 1/8 of likely total Dem voters will not vote for the nominee, or 12.5%. That is perfectly consistent with any other election year (even a little better).

So, yeah this is pretty much a non story, thanks for trying to keep the primary bitterness alive. Now, fuck off already.

by notedgeways on Thu Jun 26, 2008 at 08:50:42 PM EST

Your math is fuzzy.... (none / 0)

I'll do the math for you...instead of "1/2 of 1/2", let's just say 25%.

There's no reason to reduce that again when extrapolating to the general election population. If 25% of the primary voters are disenchanted, then you can assume that will extend to the general.

And that's pretty much in sync with a recent Rasmussen poll, which shows Obama getting 79% of Democratic voters. For him, that's a problem.

You gotta know this guy has a problem when the most recent Gallup Tracking Poll has him tied with McCain at 45%-45%. Rasmussen has it 49-45%, Obama leading. I mean, come on folks:

--The economy is in a virtual meltdown
--GOP incumbent's approval ratings are lower than Nixon's
--GOP candidate is not exactly a dynamo

This thing should not even be close.

The 53% is up from 40%, and they haven't even campaigned together yet.

More important, it also underscores the absurdity with some of these nut-jobs in their comments. "Who says he's not a terrorist."
